This mortar is made in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, and has a beautiful wave-like curve. The ripples prevent the material from escaping upward during printing, allowing for finer printing, less frictional heat, and a more fragrant finish. Traditional mortar with straight lines can be rubbed better when turned clockwise due to the stroke, but by creating a wave pattern, it is possible to rub the mortar equally well either clockwise or counterclockwise.
